Art & Science of Peer Assisted Recovery

A 30 hour training with Jim Wuelfing and Brian Lane
8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily, May 17-21, 2021

PRESENTATION:   This 30-hour, evidence-informed, highly interactive training for persons interested in providing recovery coaching services in a variety of service settings, is authored by several NH-based and national thought leaders in the field of peer-based recovery support services. Concepts and competencies addressed include: recovery-oriented systems of care; multiple pathways of recovery; harm reduction; and peer recovery supports ethics.  The content also includes boundary management; Motivational Interviewing; social justice issues in recovery coaching; self-care; role specific research and data collection and reporting.  stigma, discrimination, and appropriate language to use in service delivery and advocacy as demonstrated by scientific study are also examined.

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the peer recovery specialist role and sub-roles
  • Examine empowerment as a process and a tool to guide their activities with recovering populations
  • Examine ethical issues and practices for peer recovery specialists
  • Examine how paradigms about recovery can support or limit the process of coaching recovery
  • Identify effective means of managing personal biases about recovery
  • List the components of both the art and the science of supporting recovery
  • Practice core Motivational Interviewing skills
  • Compare the peer recovery specialist role with other recovery-supportive roles and professions
  • Define and locate opportunities to improve a Recovery-Oriented System of Care 
  • Discuss social justice issues surrounding the role and services of recovery coaches
  • Discuss the importance and roles of data in the peer recovery specialist role
  • Discuss trauma-informed care in relation to the peer recovery specialist role
  • Practice newly acquired knowledge and skills
  • Identify opportunities to improve present skills relative to coaching recovery

PRESENTERS:  Jim Wuelfing is owner and principle associate of the New England Center, dedicated to exceptional training, facilitation and consulting services for nearly 40 years. In the recovery supports arena he has been a major contributor in the design and delivery of several curricula including the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy and CCAR Ethical Considerations for Recovery Coaches, as well as Ethical Considerations for Peer Assisted Recovery, Developing Excellence in Recovery Coaching and Recovery Coaching a Harm Reduction Pathway.  He has aided in the formation of several statewide recovery community organizations and has served on the board of the Massachusetts Organization of Addiction Recovery. Jim also has a decades long experience working on social justice issues focusing on racial inequities and understanding the dynamics of power and privilege. He co-wrote with Arthur Woodard, Jr. the nationally well-received training Racism of the Well-Intended.  

Brian Lane:  As a person in long-term recovery, Brian is deeply connected with people in recovery and the organizations supporting them. He is the owner of Recovery Spectrum, a consulting and training company that helps behavioral health providers learn and implement best practices to save and change the lives of those living with substance use disorder and mental health challenges.  Brian has a passion for advocacy and education who works to expand existing recovery efforts and develop new and additional resources while eliminating stigma. He is a respected coach and trainer who is internationally certified as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRS), PRS Trainer of Coaches, Adult Mental Health First Aid trainer, and many others. Additionally, Brian most recently served as the co-founder and Executive Director of Wellspring Recovery Services, a top provider of medium-to-high accountability men’s recovery residences in the Dallas area.  Brian loves cooking and baking, singing loudly and badly in the car, and his husband and best friend of 18 years, Jonathan Boyd.
