Caregiver Stress and Problematic Substance Use

Sponsor: NH Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association

Presentation: The number of family caregivers in the US population has increased significantly in recent years. This training is designed to provide addiction professionals with the essential tools and knowledge needed to support people providing unpaid care for a loved one. Participants will explore interplay between caregiving and substance use as well as strategies to empower caregivers to manage their responsibilities without resorting to problematic substance use and to improve their overall resiliency. By the end of this training, participants will be equipped to support caregivers in managing stress, addressing substance use and strengthening family relationships. Participants will leave with evidence-based techniques to address both caregiver stress and substance use, improving outcomes for caregivers and their families.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship between caregiver stress and substance use;
  2. Explain family dynamics and the impact of substance use on caregiver relationships; and
  3. Demonstrate the use of strategies for increasing caregiver resiliency.
