Introduction to Ethics & Confidentiality

Sponsor: NH Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association

PRESENTATION:  This is an introductory training to help educate, guide, and discuss the world of substance use professional ethics, boundaries and professional expectations in everyday interactions with clients and families that we serve. Specifically, we will discuss professional and personal boundaries, ethical guidelines as stated by NAADAC, the importance of supervision, the therapeutic relationship and how to work through potential ethical issues.  We will discuss the importance of having clear boundaries, how to distinguish oneself from being “friendly” and being a “friend” and ethical practice when working with clients and why this is important for both ones self and the health and well-being of clients.   This training will introduce participants to an ethical decision-making model for dealing with ethical dilemmas and the importance of clinical supervision within that process as well as review the basis for Addiction Treatment Professional Ethics (NAADAC).   By the end of this training participants will also increase understanding of:

  • the difference between ethics, morals, values beliefs and the law;
  • boundary issues, boundary violations and dual relationships;
  • use of self disclosure; and
  •  confidentiality and ethics in regard to technology.
