Medications for Addiction Treatment

8:30 am -11:45 am daily, on February 23 & 24, 2021

PRESENTATION:    The science behind neurobiology has revealed more about how mechanisms of pathology can affect risks for mental health and substance use disorders, including the changes that are effects of genetics, epigenetics, environment, and exposures. This workshop will present evidence-based approaches to managing several different substance use disorders with FDA approved medications. We will focus this presentation through the lens of a stage which is set with other aspects of care that can bolster the beneficial effects of medications for addiction treatment. In particular, attitudes, understanding of both the disease of addiction as well as the outcomes of scientific studies (and sometimes lack of) for medications will be presented. The goal is to support patients and clients in their goals of wellness through proven pathways.

Objectives:

  • Learn which specific use disorders have FDA approved medications to improve outcomes. Discuss why and why not these medications are used in the setting of use disorders.
  • Be familiar with mechanism of action and efficacy of FDA approved medications for several use disorders.
  • Explore other off label use of medications in use disorders.
  • Discuss medication monitoring and roles and responsibilities of a treatment team.
  • Identify three components that can reduce risk and improve overall wellness for people with substance use disorders.
  • Hear first-hand accounts of how medications have affected people who have been treated through medical offices and have an opportunity to ask them questions about their recovery in the context of medication.

PRESENTERS:   Molly Rossignol, DO has been a family physician in NH for 20 years and is fellowship trained and board certified in Addiction Medicine. She has practiced addiction medicine since 2014 and has been an advocate for evidence-based care as well as safety for our community and holding to science when it comes to legislative issues around our state’s actions regarding cannabis. She serves on the NH Medical Society as a representative of the Northern New England chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She also sits on the Governor’s Task Force for Drugs and Alcohol in the areas of Perinatal Substance Exposure and the Healthcare Committee. Molly was appointed to the Therapeutic Cannabis Medical Oversight Board in 2019.

Ann Branen, RN, CARN, is a registered nurse practicing in New Hampshire for over 25 years.  Pursuing her interest in addiction nursing, Ann completed an Associate’s Degree in Addiction Counseling in 2013 and certification in Addiction nursing in 2017.  In the role as Nurse Care Coordinator, Ann has been instrumental in the development and implementation of the Program for Addictive Disorders at Concord Hospital and the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program at Elliot Health System.  With expertise in office-based addiction care, Ann has served as a mentor to providers, residents, nurses and other clinical staff.   As a consultant at Addiction Care Solutions, Ann continues to use her experience, expertise and passion to advance addiction care services in healthcare settings and practices.  Ann in currently pursuing her Masters degree in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing at Rivier University.   Ann is dedicated and passionate about bolstering the role of the nurse in addiction care and strengthening the voice of addiction nursing in NH.  Ann views every interaction with patients and peers as an opportunity to provide information aimed at the reducing the harm, stigma and discriminatory practices that continues to impact people affected by substance use disorders.
