PRESENTATION: This presentation will provide participants with the ability to examine their use of reflective practice skills in order to maximize desired outcomes in their work with clients. An in-depth review of professional boundaries as they relate to the NASW: National Association of Social Workers and the NAADAC: The Association for Addiction Professionals/NCCAP: The National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals codes of ethics; federal and state laws as well as clinical best practices. The unique impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on boundaries in professional practice will be examined. Types of professional boundaries and the challenges that professionals encounter regarding boundaries will be examined. In addition, best practices to assure healthy boundaries and to prevent boundary crossings and boundary violations will be presented.
Objectives:
- Participants will gain a clear knowledge and skills to engage in ongoing reflective clinical practice in their work with clients as related to healthy boundary maintenance.
- Those attending will gain an understanding of how their professional Codes of Ethics can guide their clinical decision making in ways that best maintain appropriate professional boundaries and resolve ethical dilemmas relating to boundaries in practice.
- Attendees will gain knowledge of types of boundaries, challenges which exist in their professional work lives.
- Participants will gain increased awareness of the unique impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on boundaries in clinical practice as well as learn innovative ideas to meet the practice challenges presented by the epidemic.
- Professionals in attendance will learn the variety of challenges to boundaries that may exist in different practice settings.
- Participants will be provided with a range of clinical strategies to promote healthy and appropriate boundaries in practice.
PRESENTER: Scott Meyer, MSW, Ph.D. is a professor emeritus of social work at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH. Dr. Meyer’s MSW is in clinical social work from Adelphi University, Garden City, NY. His doctorate is in sociology from Boston University specializing in organizational behavior, medical sociology and mental health. He served as an executive administrator for social rehabilitation and was on faculty at the BU School of Medicine as a clinical instructor of psychiatry. He taught at Curry College, MA and at Roger Williams College, RI. He provided counseling services as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in NH and is a Board-Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work through the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work. Dr. Meyer works with public and private agencies providing organizational and clinical, supervisory and administrative consultation, training, program evaluation and grant writing services.
