Virtual: Ethics & Best Practices in Telehealth for Substance Use Disorders

Sponsored by: NH Alcohol & Drug Counselors Association

PRESENTATION:  With the sudden lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of us had to learn to quickly switch gears from in-person to remote communication. Organizations were understandably underprepared, and frontline workers were often left to figure out solutions on their own. Many of us will continue to work from home or an office where we are communicating far less in-person than before. An aim of this workshop is to present some of the most promising practices in telehealth communication based on research conducted prior to and during the pandemic. We will also address the physical and mental exhaustion experienced by people serving vulnerable populations via phone, text, or video. Ethical considerations related to telehealth practices will incorporated throughout the day, and participants will be invited to share their own personal strategies to work more effectively and solicit input from each other. As a result of this training, participants will be able to :

• Articulate and respond to the challenges and opportunities inherent in telehealth communication

• Develop strategies to reduce communication barriers via telephone, text, and video

• Identify and discuss ethical dilemmas related to working off-site

• Learn self-care strategies to reduce stress and fatigue related to telecommunication
